Seascape Sun

Seascape Sun

October on the coast in Northern California is one of the best times of the year. We get amazing weather with minimal marine layer and clear skies which can make for great images of the sun going down over the water.

I'd been eying this grove of trees in Aptos in front of the Seascape Beach Resort for years, trying to find a great angle or time of day to capture them.

As the sun started to set, I watched it move slowly down through the trees over the course of about 20 minutes. My first vantage point put the sun behind a clump of trees and I did not have a clear view. Inspired by Galen Rowell's technique of moving fast and light, I took one lens and one camera body and ran down to a spot where the sun lined up perfectly with the trees. F8 and be there he said!

I think this image works well in both horizontal and vertical. Which do you prefer?

Have a great weekend!
