The Shake

photocrati gallerySometimes you have to follow the crowd to get the shot! Last night, two icons of women’s basketball squared off, Tara Vandaver and Geno Auriemma of UConn. Getting the two of them together, at Stanford, is the iconic shot that can be used for years. My rule of thumb in these situations is to follow Paul Sakuma, the AP staff photographer, and one of my mentors. He always knows what’s coming, and when you see him standing around in a different spot on the court, away from the other photographers, you know he’s on to something. So, I posted up next to him, and waited……. Sure, the handshake is not the game winning basket, or an image of a celebrating Stanford team, but, it’s an important one, that historically, has amazing impact. Two legends, shaking hands in a sign of mutual respect. A nice moment.
